56th Session Recap

Conference Highlights

The 56th Session of Berkeley Model United Nations was held on March 14-16, 2008. Nearly 1500 students from across America and around the world attended the conference. Along with students from California and fourteen other US states, delegations from Canada, Kuwait, and Albania were in attendance.

The keynote address was delivered by the New York Times best-selling author and founder of the Central Asia Institute, Greg Mortenson. Over the course of the conference, delegates raised over $2,000 for “Pennies for Peace”, a fundraising program that raises money to help the Institute build schools in rural Afghanistan and Pakistan.

School Awards

Awards were given to schools in three mutually exclusive categories. Two Best New School awards were given to schools that attended BMUN for the first time. Three Best Club Awards were given to schools whose students participate in MUN as an extracurricular activity. Three Best School Awards were given to schools whose students participate in MUN as part of the curriculum. The overall best performing high school at the 56th Session was Mira Costa High School (Manhattan Beach, CA).
