Introduction from the Sustainability Coordinator

Dear advisors, delegates, and members of the community:

Within the Berkeley Secretariat, we’ve always prided ourselves on being at the forefront of innovation among Model United Nations conferences. With each new year of leadership, a new group of college students who are passionate about international governance, and excited to inspire a similar passion in high school students, brings new ideas and themes to the organization.

Today we are thrilled to announce that we are broadening our horizons in a new direction. For Berkeley Model United Nation’s 57th Session, we have established a new facet to leadership within the Secretariat: the Sustainability Coordinator. As one of the largest MUN conferences on the West Coast, and being located in a very environmentally-conscious part of the nation, we know that we have an obligation to do our part to reduce
the impact of our club and the conference on the world around us — and it’s bigger than you might think! From the materials we use in preparation for and throughout the conference weekend, to the travel undertaken by delegates from all over the United States and those who come to us internationally, to the many ways in which the secretariat and delegates all consume on a regular basis, there is much room for improvement. We have established the Sustainability Coordinator position in order to help us achieve the goal of facilitating a greener conference, and making BMUN as waste-neutral and sustainable as possible.

We are planning to emphasize sustainability throughout BMUN’s 57th session by raising participants’ consciousness of the many ways that their choices affect the natural environment — from the ways we choose to dispose of trash, plastics and electronic waste, to the types of food and water that we consume regularly. We hope that you will embrace this goal with us as we work to achieve a more sustainable conference. Please check back regularly as we will be adding more webpages to let you know what we’re doing, and what you can do to participate! Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions, concerns or comments as we go through the process of becoming greener.

We look forward to serving you in as sustainable a manner as possible.

Sincerely,

Marie Logan
