Letter From the USG of Research

Dear Delegates,

It is my distinct honor to welcome you to the 60th Annual Session of Berkeley Model United Nations. My name is Bill Chen, and as the Under-Secretary General of Research, I am in charge of committees and conference policies. BMUN is the nation’s oldest high school United Nations simulation, attracting high-caliber delegates domestically and internationally. This upcoming conference will be one of the most exciting in recent memory.

In an ongoing effort to create a committee environment that allows delegates to more easily interact with each other and their chairs, we are offering a greater number of smaller committees this year with more inter-committee crises simulations. The 60th Session will feature nineteen unique committees, each engaging you to participate in active, fast-paced debate that will be intellectually and emotionally satisfying. The three types of committees are large General Assembly committees, medium-sized Economic and Social committees, and small, advanced specialized committees. Brand new committees are being introduced this year, including the International Monetary Fund, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and most importantly, Press Corps. Each committee, chaired by highly motivated and knowledgeable members of the Secretariat, features thought-provoking topics that will challenge you to think creatively about how best to resolve the problem at hand.

Whether you are a first-time MUN delegate or an experienced conference participant, BMUN will help you acquire the tools needed to thoroughly analyze pressing world issues and effectively debate them. You will not only learn a tremendous amount during the three days you spend on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley, but also have an unforgettably fun time. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding the conference. Good luck preparing and see you in March!

Sincerely,

Bill Chen
